Embracing New Beginnings With Confidence
Starting a new school year often brings excitement, but it can also be nerve-wracking. This mix of emotions is perfectly normal. You're not alone in feeling this way, whether it's your first day at college or stepping onto a new college campus. Here, we'll discuss how to keep moving forward despite the fears and anxieties that might arise.

Reflecting on Personal Experiences
This topic came to mind as I recently embarked on a new experience myself. A few weeks ago, I hosted my first in-person student event, an experience filled with anticipation and nerves. If you subscribe to the College and Career Connections newsletter, you probably know about this event, as I shared my experiences in great detail there.

You're probably wondering how my experience ties into the nervousness you might be feeling about the new school year. The emotions are quite similar. Whether you're starting a new academic year or tackling a new project, the feelings of nervousness and excitement can be identical.

Facing Your Fears
Let me take you through my journey. A few months ago, I had an idea to host an in-person event for students—a way to foster community and create networking opportunities. Initially, I let the idea sit idle for too long. My own fears and a bit of imposter syndrome crept in, making me doubt my readiness for such an event.

I decided to call up my friend William, a local podcaster with vast experience in hosting live events in our community. We met for coffee, and before long, William asked, "What's the date?" After some quick checks in my calendar, we settled on Monday, June 17th.

Overcoming Anxiety and Moving Forward
With a date set, I started making plans. Initially, my excitement was high, but as the event date approached, my fears and anxieties began to surface. Thoughts like, "Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea," flooded my mind. But I pushed through, even securing two sponsors for the event, which allowed us to offer free drinks to all attendees.

Through this experience, I learned valuable lessons on facing new challenges, which I’m eager to share with you.

Top Tips to Conquer New Experiences

1) Find an Accountability Partner
Having an accountability partner is crucial. This could be another student at the same college, someone attending your classes, or even a roommate. They serve as a support system, providing encouragement and perspective throughout the process.

2) Organize and Plan
Write down all the tasks you need to accomplish before the big day. Having a to-do list helps organize your thoughts and actions. Sharing this list with your accountability partner can also provide you with valuable feedback and a different perspective.

3) Reframe Your Emotions
One key insight is to recognize that fear and excitement can feel very similar. Instead of viewing those knots in your stomach as fear, think of them as signs of excitement. Remind yourself that these feelings are normal and do not let them hold you back.

The Power of Community
Reflecting on my event, I’m grateful I pushed through my fears. It was a smashing success, receiving rave reviews from attendees and fostering community spirit. This experience would have been missed had I succumbed to my fears.

On Other News: Scholarship Opportunity for STEM Students
Before we wrap up, I want to share an exciting opportunity for STEM students starting in Fall 2024. Thanks to a generous donor, freshman engineering students at Houston Christian University, with a 3.5 GPA or better, can qualify for the Grace Hopper Scholarship, covering up to full tuition. Transfer students are also eligible. For more information, go here.

Final Thoughts
Facing new challenges can be daunting, but with the right mindset and support system, you can navigate these experiences confidently. Remember, having an accountability partner and staying organized are key components to success. Reframe fear as excitement and seize every new opportunity that comes your way.

Stay well, be present, and enjoy your journey. Until next time my friend!
